What does mobile phone insurance cover?

Accidental damage

Drops, cracked screens, liquid spills — the most commonly claimed cover type. Manufacturer warranties typically exclude all accidental damage.

Theft and loss

Most policies cover theft; some also cover accidental loss. Check carefully — conditions vary significantly between providers.

Worldwide cover

Most good policies include worldwide protection for a set number of days per year — typically 60-180 days. Essential if you travel frequently.

AppleCare+ vs third-party

AppleCare+ covers hardware repairs and accidental damage but not theft or loss. A third-party policy covers all three, often at lower overall cost.

Common questions

Does it matter what device I have?

Most providers cover all major smartphones and tablets. Check for any device age or value limits before buying.

Does my home insurance cover my phone?

Contents insurance may cover your phone at home, but rarely outside — and almost never covers accidental damage or loss without an expensive add-on. Specialist gadget insurance is usually better value for phones and tablets.

Is my phone covered if I lose it abroad?

Most specialist mobile insurance policies include worldwide cover as standard. Check the policy wording as some limit claims outside the UK, and make sure 'loss' is included — not all policies cover it.

Does phone insurance cover a cracked screen?

Accidental damage — including cracked screens — is one of the most common claims. Most specialist policies cover it, though an excess will apply. Check what the excess is before you buy.

Can I insure an older or refurbished phone?

Yes, though some insurers set a maximum age limit (often 3–5 years). Refurbished phones are generally insurable. You'll need the IMEI number and the make, model, and value when you apply.

What excess should I expect?

Typically £25-£100 per claim. A higher excess usually means a lower premium.

Can I insure multiple devices on one policy?

Yes — several providers offer multi-gadget policies covering phones, tablets, and laptops on a single plan, often at a discount.

What to look for in a policy

Loss vs theft

These are not the same. Make sure your policy covers both — some cheaper policies only cover theft (proven by a crime reference number) and not accidental loss.

Unauthorised use

If your phone is stolen and the thief runs up a huge bill, does your policy cover it? Some do, with limits — worth checking.

Multi-device discounts

If you want to insure a phone and a tablet, some providers offer multi-device discounts. Worth comparing a bundle versus two separate policies.
